Thin Calorimetry for Cosmic-Ray Studies Outside the Earth’s Atmosphere

چکیده

Cosmic ray experiments outside the Earth’s atmosphere are subject to severe restrictions on the mass of the instruments. Therefore, it is important that the experimental information that can be obtained per unit detector mass is maximized. In this paper, tests are described of a thin (1.4 λint deep) hadron calorimeter that was designed with this goal in mind. This detector was equipped with two independent active media, which provided complementary information on the showering hadrons. It is shown that by combining the information from these media it was possible to reduce the effects of the dominant leakage fluctuations on the calorimeter performance.

Cosmic Ray Abundance at Aircraft Altitudes in the Earth’s Atmosphere

Recent investigations of cosmic ray primaries and secondaries at aviation altitudes in the Earth’s atmosphere include the study of Z≥2 particles along the London-New York flight routes on supersonic aircraft. Preliminary charge spectra will be presented for these nuclei and comparisons will be made with the predictions of cosmic ray transport models in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Earth X-ray albedo for cosmic X-ray background radiation in the 1–1000 keV band

We present calculations of the reflection of the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) by the Earth’s atmosphere in the 1–1000 keV energy range. The calculations include Compton scattering and X-ray fluorescent emission and are based on a realistic chemical composition of the atmosphere. Such calculations are relevant for CXB studies using the Earth as an obscuring screen (as was recently done by INTEG...

Hard X-ray emission of the Earth’s atmosphere: Monte Carlo simulations

We perform Monte Carlo simulations of cosmic-ray induced hard X-ray emission in the Earth’s atmosphere. We find that the shape of the spectrum emergent from the atmosphere in the energy range ∼25–300 keV is determined by Compton scattering and photoabsorption and is virtually independent of the incident cosmic ray spectrum. We provide a fitting formula for the spectral intensity as a function o...

Atmospheric Calorimetry above 10 eV: Shooting Lasers at the Pierre Auger Cosmic-Ray Observatory

The Pierre Auger Cosmic-Ray Observatory uses the earth’s atmosphere as a calorimeter to measure extensive air-showers created by particles of astrophysical origin. Some of these particles carry joules of energy. At these extreme energies, test beams are not available in the conventional sense. Yet understanding the energy response of the observatory is important. For example, the propagation di...

3-D model for cosmic ray planetary ionisation in the middle atmosphere

A 3-D planetary model of the cosmic ray electron production rate q(h) (cm−3 s−1) has been developed for the strato-mesosphere and lower thermosphere (altitude range 30–100 km) with a 10-km step. The spectrum of the primary cosmic rays is modelled by an analytical expression using input data from the CREME96 model. An isotropic penetration of the cosmic rays from the upper hemisphere is assumed ...
